80 Years Since the June 1941 Deportations

June 14 marks the 80th anniversary of the horrific days in June of 1941 when more than 10,000 people were forcibly deported from Estonia to Siberia.

 

The Estonian National Museum (ERM) in Tartu will commemorate the event on Sunday, June 13 at 1 pm Estonian time with a live online broadcast from the museum.

 

Snippets of recollections and letters of deportees will be read and ERM's own 53-minute documentary presented.

 

 

European Commission Demands Estonia End Harvest of Protected Forests

The European Commission has initiated infringement proceedings against the Estonian state, for allowing the destruction of thousands of hectares of protected forests in Natura 2000 areas.

 

Between 2001 and 2019, 15,000 hectares of forests which are part of the Natura 2000 network are said to have been destroyed. 80% of the protected forest has disappeared in the last five years.

 

These figures were cited by an international and independent consortium of investigative journalists half a year ago in their analysis.

 

 

Consulate General in NY Helping Bring Cultural Treasures to Estonia

Preservation of Estonian cultural heritage is an important part of the work of the Consulate General in New York. In recent years, the Consulate General, in cooperation with Estonian authorities, has helped bring home Estonian cultural materials and collections from abroad, which both current and future generations can study and enjoy.

 

 

Sundance Institute Supporting Estonian's Documentary

The first full-length film by Anna Hints, "Savvusanna's Sisters”, an Estonian-French-Icelandic collaboration, has won a $ 40,000 production grant from the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Fund. 1,100 projects from all over the world applied for their support, out of which only 18 were selected.
