Kaljulaid Appointed First UN Global Advocate for Women and Children


President Kersti Kaljulaid was appointed the first Global Advocate of the United Nations Secretary-General for Every Woman Every Child on June 27.

 

The appointment will last for two years.

 

Kaljulaid, who was on a working visit to the U.S., was appointed to the position by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York.

 

She will mainly focus on three goals: reducing maternal mortality, increasing nutritional security and en-hancing innovation and the use of digital solutions.

 

 

14 Cross Forests in Southern Estonia Receive Cultural Designation


Estonia's Minister of Culture Anneli Ott designated 14 areas with cross-marked trees and forests in South-Eastern Estonia to be of cultural significance and thereby protected.

 

“Cross forests are part of Southern Estonia's funerary customs and spiritual cultural heritage.

 

The existing cross forests of South-Eastern Estonia are the last remaining examples of what was once a widespread tradition of cutting the sign of a cross into the bark of a tree, most often a pine, growing next to the route from the person's home to their final resting place at the cemetery.

 

 

Only Four Weeks Until the Start of the Olympics


Magnus Kirt, Estonia's silver medalist in the javelin at last year's World Championships will unfortunately not be travelling to the Tokyo games due to a leg injury.

 

The same fate may await wrestler Heiki Nabi, who was temporarily banned from competition until the conclusion of his doping investigation and is also injured.

 

Hurdler Rasmus Mägi is optimistic going to the Games.

 

He made it to the 400 m hurdles finals at the last Olympics and recently set a new Estonian record in the same event.

 

Three Estonians will be competing in the decathlon in Toyko: Johannes Erm, Maicel Uibo and Karel Tilga.

 

Triathlete Kaidi Kivioja, judoka Grigori Minaškin and dressage rider Dina Ellermann have all also secured spots to compete at the Summer Games.
