Estonian Women's Épée Team Take Olympic Gold

The Estonian women's épée fencing team won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, after coming from behind to defeat South Korea in an emotional final July 27.

 

The result is the first gold medal for Estonia at the summer games since 2008. Katrina Lehis, Julia Beljajeva, Erika Kirpu and reserve member Irina Embrich, who was brought in and won the seventh match, defeated their opponents 36:32 to take top spot.

 

The Estonian team had beaten Poland in the quarter-finals and then Italy in the semi-finals.

 

The gold was Estonia's second medal in Tokyo so far, adding to fencer Katrina Lehis' individual bronze medal won Saturday.

 

 

Estonian Co-Produced Film Wins Cannes Grand Prix

Estonian co-production "Compartment No. 6" ("Kupee nr 6") has won the prestigious Grand Prix award or second top prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, sharing the honor with Iranian director Asghar Farhadi's "A Hero" ("Ghahreman").

 

The movie is an Estonian-Finnish-Russian-German collaboration by Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen and follows a long distance train journey across northwestern Russia.

 

Inspired by Finnish writer Rosa Liksom’s 2011 novel of the same name, Compartment No.6 was written by Estonians Andris Feldmanis, Livia Ulman and Kuosmanen.

 

One of the producers is Estonian Riina Sildos. The film also scooped up the Ecumenical Prize.

 

 

MS Estonia Wreck Dive Reveals Vehicle Deck Ramp Fully Open

Following initial reports that no major findings had arisen from a new investigation into the 1994 sinking of the ferry MS Estonia, diving work has recently revealed that the vessel's vehicle ramp now lies in a fully-open position, whereas it was previously been reported to have been closed.

 

The findings came on day six of a preliminary investigation conducted by a joint Estonian-Swedish team and in part prompted by a 2020 documentary which found large holes in the vessel's hull, prompting speculation over whether these had been related to the sinking.
