Estonians Awarded Research Fellowship at Stanford University
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia and the Stanford University Libraries are pleased to announce that Dr. Lauri Mälksoo and Dr. Piret Ehin have been awarded the 2022 Short-Term Research Fellowship at Stanford University for Estonian Scholars.
The new 6-8-week fellowship aims at enabling Estonian researchers to make use of Stanford’s strong collections, academic knowledge, and networks related to the study of the history, society, and politics of Estonia and the Baltic region.
The fellowship is hosted by SUL's Baltic Studies Program and co-hosted by the Europe Center/Stanford Global Studies.
Kontaveit's Spectacular Season Ends With Loss in WTA Final
Garbiñe Muguruza became the first Spanish tennis player to win the showcase WTA Finals tournament in Guadalajara, defeating Estonia's Anett Kontaveit 6:3, 7:5 in the final match on November 18.
The Estonian will finish the season ranked seventh in the world and will be awarded an Order of Merit, Second Class, upon returning to Estonia.
Kontaveit finished her season winning 29 of her last 33 matches.
She is the first Estonian to make it to the season-end showcase tournament and to be ranked in the world top-10.
Estonian Cinematographer Writes Book About Hollywood Career
Estonian cinematographer Alar Kivilo, who has shot films in Hollywood for 25 years, has penned an autobiography entitled "Operaator".
Published by Pigrim and edited by journalist Neeme Raud, the book is illustrated with about a thousand pictures.
Raud proposed that Kivilo put his journey into a book last year after the Montreal native won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
Raud commented: "The main heroic act, is that Alar, who has not grown up in Estonia, wrote this book in Estonian himself."
