Admiral Bellingshausen Sets Off on Arctic Expedition

The sailing ship Admiral Bellingshausen began its voyage from the port of Sillamäe to the Arctic on May 25.

 

During the Arctic expedition, a series of popular science films will be recorded, research will be carried out and water and soil samples will be taken for use by Estonian scientists.

May got off to a busy start for many Estonian officials who were called on to share their expertise in various aspects of European and transatlantic security.  

Several think tanks hosted events looking at challenges ranging from the adoption of artificial intelligence into NATO’s toolbox to regional concerns such as America’s role in the Three Seas Initiative and Estonia’s role in collaboration on security in the Arctic.

The mini Boston Baltic Film Festival (BBFF) in April was a huge success, having over 400 participants, bringing together people  around the world to watch films made in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies is pleased to announce that Jānis Juzefovičs, Maarja Merivoo-Parro, Charles Perrin, and David Trimbach have been awarded the 2021–2022 Research Grants for Emerging Scholars.

The research grants of up to $6,000 support early-career scholars in any field of  Baltic Studies.

EU Set to Open Borders to Fully Vaccinated Travelers

On Wednesday, May 19 European Union member states agreed to open borders to travelers who are completely vaccinated against the coronavirus, sources in Brussels said.

 

At the meeting in Brussels, diplomats also agreed to raising the level to which the infection could rise in a country before declaring travel unsafe.

The Consulate General of Estonia continues with the theme year celebrating the American architect Louis Kahn, who was born 120 years ago in Saaremaa, Estonia.

 

The consulate is presenting a new film that illuminates Kahn's work from an unexpected angle.

This short film by Maria Juur and Nick Malkin, “Jersey Homesteads: Louis Kahn and Small Town Modernism” (8 min, 2021), presents the story of Roosevelt, NJ, a utopian suburb designed by Kahn.
