The ESTO Flag Awaits at the Estonian National Museum
The ESTO flag, which made its debut at the first Global Estonian Festival in Toronto in 1972 and has been part of the Eesti Rahva Muuseumi (ERM) collection since 1999, was brought out of the museum's storage on May 28. In five weeks time, it will travel to Helsinki to the XII ESTO festival with ERM director Alar Karis and ESTO vice-director Ants Johanson.
European Parliament Election Not Popular in Estonia
On May 26, 37.3% of citizens with the right to vote participated in the European Parliament elections in Estonia. The highest percentage was in Tallinn (42.2%) and lowest in Ida-Viru County (24.3%). The most popular candidate was former Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand (Social Democrats) with 65 559 votes. The party to receive the most votes was Reform with 87 158 votes, or 26.2 percent of all votes. Estonia's six MEPs are thereby Marina Kaljurand (SDE), Andrus Ansip (Reform), Urmas Paet (Reform), Yana Toom (Centre), Jaak Madison (EKRE), and Sven Mikser (SDE). After Britain leaves the European Union, Estonia will have one additional seat in the European Parliament. The so-called Brexit candidate is Riho Terras (Isamaa).
Collected Poems of Toronto Estonian Urve Karuks Published in Estonia
On May 29, Estonian diaspora poet Urve Karuks' “Collected Poems”, compiled by literary scholar Sirje Kiin, was presented at the Writers' House in Tallinn. The presentation was broadcast live by the ERR cultural portal (kultuur.err.ee) and can be watched at https://bit.ly/2wufJy4. Poems were recited by actor Anu Lamp.
