Emergency Situation Declared Over in Estonia
During an online government session held on May 16, the Estonian Government approved a resolution ending the state of emergency in the country as of midnight on Sunday, May 17.
The respective orders of the government and the head of the emergency situation were thereby repealed.
Restrictions imposed during the emergency situation will gradually be eased and transferred to new legal bases.
The most important restrictions of movement, i.e. the 2 + 2 rule (a maximum of 2 people in a group, staying 2 metres apart from others) will remain in effect, as will the "special health care situation".
No Estonian University Professors in 20-30 Years
Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ) incumbent rector Jaak Aaviksoo said on the "Vikerhommik" ERR morning radio program that since Estonian youth do not wish to undertake doctoral studies, there won't be any local university professors in 20-30 years.
"The problem of all Estonian universities is that less than half of those in doctoral studies are of Estonian background.
An academic career is not attractive enough for them. Foreigners, not Estonians, tend to fulfil their dreams here.
In 20-30 years, we won't have any Estonian-language professors and it is a major concern," Aaviksoo said.
