U.S. Ends Danske Estonia Money Laundering Investigation

The Estonian branch of Danske Bank did not breach U.S. sanctions by moving around billions of dollars in suspicious funds, the U.S. Department of Treasury reports.

The bank thereby expects a lower fine than initially forecast. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) told Danske Bank on Dec. 19 that the investigation into the actions of its Estonian branch will be terminated, Bloomberg reported.

The Public Prosecutor's Office in Estonia said the decision of the U.S. Treasury Department will not affect the ongoing investigation in Estonia.

Ilves Appointed Visiting Professor at University of Tartu

Former president Toomas Hendrik Ilves has been appointed the University of Tartu's Visiting Professor of Democracy in the Digital Age.

For one year, beginning in January, Ilves will deliver lectures to students and participate in developing teaching and research in the area of e‑governance at the university's Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies.

No Presidential Reception or Parade on Independence Day

Due to the coronavirus, the traditional reception of the President and parade of the Defense Forces in celebration of the 103rd anniversary of Estonia's independence will not take place on February 24, 2021.

The events were scheduled to take place in Tartu, but now will take place without guests and online.
