Estonian State Supported VES Children's Edition

Last year, Estonian language newspapers and magazines could apply for grants from the state.

As part of a pilot project which hopefully will continue, KÜSK, the National Foundation of Civil Society offered financial support to seven Estonian publications abroad.

(There were in fact a total of seven candidates.)

Vaba Eesti Sõna chose to direct its support mainly to the paper's 4-page color children's insert, which is published four times a year.

With the support received, VES also sent various issues of the children's edition to 220 Estonian families in the U.S., including those who don't have a newspaper subscription, with the goal of sparking interest and support.

 
Estonia Planning to Apply for UN Security Council Membership 2050-2051

Estonia is currently halfway through its two-year post as an elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

This first year has provided an excellent chance to have a say in global peace and security and Estonia is therefore planning to apply for UN Security Council membership again.

Estonia and the U.S. Funding Effort on 5G Military Mobility

In late January, the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (NATO CCDCOE) will launch an initiative focused on the security of fifth generation (5G) telecommunications networks with the aim of analyzing 5G security in the context of military mobility.

Mari Kalkun Named Musician of the Year

Estonian Public Broadcasting's (ERR's) music editors chose Mari Kalkun as the 2020 Musician of the Year.

Mari Kalkun is the first folk/world music musician to receive the recognition.

She was awarded the title at a studio concert on January 13, the podcast of which can be enjoyed on Klassikaraadio, Vikerraadio, Raadio 4 or with video on ERR's cultural portal.
