Boat Refugees Remembered on Anniversary of the Republic

For the first time ever, people who fled Estonia in 1944 were commemorated on the nation's Independence Day.

Wreaths were laid at the foot of the monument on the western coast at Puise in memory of those who never made it across the stormy sea, as well as those that did and kept the hope of freedom alive abroad, many of whom never lived to see Estonia achieve re-independence.

Jaan Holt Receives State Decoration from Estonian President

President Kersti Kaljulaid presented state decorations to 152 people whose commitment to their work and community has made life in Estonia better.

Jaan Holt, Professor Emeritus of the Washington-Alexandria Center for Architecture at Virginia Tech (Polytechnic Institute and State University) was awarded the Order of the White Star, 4th Class for supporting Estonian architectural education.
