Tallinn Wins European Green Capital 2023 Award
On September 9, Tallinn received a high recognition from the European Commission in Lahti, Finland – the title of European Green Capital 2023.
The Estonian capital beat 16 other cities for the title.
Among Tallinn's strength's the jury highlighted a holistic approach, free public transport, urban industrial area (brownfield) site conversion and being an ambassador for green thinking.
University of Helsinki Bows to Public Pressure to Continue Teaching Estonian
The opportunity to learn Estonian at the university level came under threat in Finland this spring, yet is now set to continue, since the University of Helsinki decided to fill the position of Estonian language lecturer.
Finnish estophiles were shocked at news of the austerity plan that would have endangered Estonian language higher education in Finland.
Pressure from the public led to the decision to fill the position of lecturer not for a fixed term as before, but for an indefinite period.
Estonian language courses are also offered at the universities of Turku, Tampere and Oulu, but the University of Helsingi offers the most comprehensive Estonian language and culture program.
Elen Lotman Elected President of International Federation of Cinematographers
For the first time in the history of the organization, the International Federation of Cinematographers (IMAGO) elected two presidents: Elen Lotman, camera operator, director, lecturer and member of the Estonian Society of Cinematographers (ESC), and Ron Johanson, President of the Australian Film Association.
Tallinn Film Hub Added to List of Nationally Important Cultural Objects
On September 13, the Riigikogu decided to add the planned film industry hub "Tallinn Film Wonderland" (Tallinna Filmilinnak) to the list of nationally important cultural objects.
This decision marks a new era for the successful Estonian film industry.
The hub, to be built on Paljassaare peninsula, would be the biggest studio complex in the Baltic Sea area.
