Construction Of National Museum Building To Start In March
ERR News - Tõnis Lukas, appointed head of the National Museum yesterday, said he hoped to sign the building contract for the museum's new complex next week and that construction should start in March. It is Lukas's second time directing the museum, ETV reported. He praised the work of his predecessor, Krista Aru. “There is little sense in pushing through too many personal ideas in a permanent institution. The museum will continue with it's main functions. But if the construction work does start, the activity of the museum will be interesting to everyone […] In that respect I can tell you that in the next six months we are planning many cultural events,” Lukas said. The planned multimillion-euro building was turned down for EU funding, but the Estonian government has promised to pick up the bill. According to Lukas, the new building will open in late 2016. Lukas, who also directed the museum between 1992 and 1995, recently gave up his seat in Parliament to return to the job.
