A Deer Walked Into Lakewood Estonian Church Office
Lakewoodi Eesti Kiriku kontorisse hüppas aknast hirv...
LAKEWOOD, NJ –The punchline of the Monday morning (nov. 17, 2104) incident still is largely unknown for parishioners at Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lakewood.
The church's pastor, The Rev. Thomas Vaga, said he still is scratching his head as to how the deer lept through a small window in his office, ran amok, then exited the same window it entered.
Vaga got a call about 7:30 a.m. from a caregiver who lives in an apartment above the office saying the window had been broken. The initial worry was that someone had broken into the office in search of money.
Vaga said his concerns were for irreplaceable historical documents from the Estonian archives that were on exhibit at the church.
Soon after, Vaga received another call that the caregivers' exterior security camera footage showed a deer entered the office about 2 a.m.
While blood was splattered about the office and a desk and other items had been moved, there was no deer inside.
An investigation by Officers Jason Yahr and Matt Mcavoy suggests the deer may have run into an exterior cinderblock wall, causing it to become disoriented prior to crashing through the window, Detective Sgt. Greg Stafford-Smith wrote in an email.
Eda Treumuth, Vice President of the Church Board of Directors said that Lakewood must really have very intelligent animals to find their way out throuth the same window they crashed – the poor deer must be somewhere licking his wounds.
