Lavrov: Russia Could Soon Ratify Border Treaty
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia could soon be ready to go ahead with the Russian-Estonian border treaty. His Estonian counterpart said that Estonia is waiting for concrete actions from Russia.
“I am certain that the treaty will be ratified. In Estonia, this process has not been completed yet, either. In Russia it is the government’s prerogative to initiate the ratification process by submitting a corresponding bill to the State Duma. I hope that we will start this process in the near future,” Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow, reported TASS.
“Our legislators are right when they point to the complicated climate in our relations, but there are no doubts about the border issue,” Lavrov said.
“Estonia’s previous foreign minister, Urmas Paet, and myself had originally expected that my visit to Tallinn for the ratification of instruments of verification might take place in May. This will depend on the atmosphere in our relations,” he added.
“We are awaiting concrete actions by Russia, following foreign minister Lavrov's press conference,” Estonian foreign minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said. She added that a bill to ratify the treaty is yet to be handed to the Russian Duma, while the identical document in Estonia has already passed its first reading in Parliament.
