It has happened again! An article and instructions on how to knit the Tanumüts by Nancy Bush, the estophile who constantly heightens awarness about interesting and high qualty Estonian handicrafts, has been published in the the knitters elegant magazine “Piecework’s” January/February issue.

Nancy excels in discovering knitting patterns from different cultures and has become an enthusiast of this Estonian handicraft. If instructions are not available, she works out pattern stiches from the textile orginals.

Nancy does not relay only her knowledge and enthusiasm about the beauty of Estonian handicrafts through her seminars and instructional articles in quality magazines and books, but she also raises awareness of Estonia and its history to many people in the United States and abroad. (See: www.woolywest.com regarding the Haapsalu sall). Her seminars teach not only  knitting of an article or pattern, but also include its history and usage.

The article in the January/February issue of “Piecework” (the 9th Historical Knitting Issue) carries pictures, stories and of course instructions on how to knit the “Tanumüts,” which was especially popular among the refugee children after WWII in Displaced Persons camps in Germany, but also with Estonian refugees elswhere. The article includes a wonderful comprehensive history of Estonia during WWII era.

Nancy Bush has promulgated the understanding and recognition of Estonia and Estonian culture more widely than many of us. I truly think she diserves a medal of recognition from Estonians.
