ERR News. Photographer Aleksandr Abrosimov recorded an interesting natural phenomenon at Stroomi beach in Tallinn – bizarre ice balls that look as if a prehistoric beast has laid its eggs on the beach.

Pictures of the balls, 5–10 centimeters in diameter, were published in one of Germany's biggest news portals Spiegel Online.

Abrosimov told Spiegel that many of his friends thought the balls looked like dinosaur eggs, monster caviar or tennis balls.

According to Spiegel, the balls form when ice crystals build up in shallow surfs. Rocking slowly in the freezing water, they grow bigger and rounder. However, the exact conditions under which the phenomenon occurs are not very well known.

Sadly, the balls had already melted when ERR's photographer made it to the beach.
