According to the Estonian Film Institute, the authors of projects that received production grants at the Republic of Estonia 100 Feature Film Competition, are full-length movie debutants  who represent the new generation of filmmakers. The final results of the competition that lasted for more than three years are now public.  

The Estonian Film Institute decided to support the making of the following feature films: Estonian literary classic Truth and Justice by director Tanel Toom (granted €2,187 million), Comrade Child by director Moonika Siimets (€1,2m), Jaan from Hell by director Kaur Kokk (€1,2m), Take It Or Leave It by director Liina Trishkina-Vanhatalo (€720 000) and a children’s film Eia’s Christmas at Tondikaku by director Anu Aun (€837 000).

’’The chosen feature films cover a wide range of topics and a long time-frame, from repressions that happened centuries ago to problems that face us today. Directors are bringing to life both Estonian big classics and modern stories’’, Toomas Kiho, Head of the Steering Group of Estonia 100, said. Kiho added that Estonia might receive by its centenary a new movie classic, provided that the chosen projects succeed. ’’The chosen feature films engage many generations, and thankfully children too, to whom we pay special attention.’’

The competition was launched in December 2012. 165 ideas for feature films were presented for the first round of applications by June 2013; 17 ideas were chosen and scripts were written by October 2014. In the next stage, 9 strong projects were chosen, the creative development of which continued until October 2015. In the same month, the jury of Estonia 100 highlighted six feature films.

All projects that went through the creative development process  could apply for a production grant from the Estonian Film Institute. In the long animation category of Estonia 100, one application was presented by the deadline, 7th December of 2016. Lotte and the Lost Dragons, directed by Janno Põldma and Heiki Ernits, received a production grant of €1,5m. For the round of applications of Estonia 100 feature film contest, 7 applications were presented by February 22 2016. Five of them received production grants.

The animations and feature films created in the framework of Estonia 100 will make it to the big screen during February 2018 – February 2019.
