After three years as music director of the Sarasota Orchestra, Anu Tali has developed a rapport with what she calls the “group leaders” of her orchestra. She has plans. She has goals. She has dreams — and now, she has more time to accomplish them, writes the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
On June 27, the orchestra announced that Tali signed a three-year contract renewal to continue her role as music director.
“One of the things that Anu has brought to Sarasota is a tremendous energy and excitement about the orchestra, and our audiences are really thrilled with the experiences they’re having,” said Joseph McKenna, the orchestra’s president and CEO. “We are so excited to have her continue her terrific music making with our terrific musicians.”
Tali, 44, is a critically acclaimed guest conductor in demand worldwide. In addition to her role in Sarasota, Tali serves as Chief Conductor of the Nordic Symphony Orchestra, which she founded with her twin sister, Kadri Tali, in 1997.
Tali said that she has seen tremendous change and growth in the orchestra since she became the organization's fifth music director in August 2013, succeeding Leif Bjaland. She is determined to capitalize on those changes over the next few years.
“The musicality has grown a lot,” she said. “Now we’re taking many more risks. The sound, the sound quality, range, phrasing and musical thinking is much bolder all of a sudden.”
McKenna attributes much to Tali’s own skill.
“She is very focused, energetic, and really excited about excellence,” he said. “I also describe her as an ‘organic music maker’ — she’s really interested in bringing the most organic qualities out of the music, and having that touch the audience in a most profound way.”
