On June 3, Col. Aivar Salekešin was presented the Legion of Merit award (degree of Commander) by U.S. Ambassador Levine at EDF headquarters in Tallinn in recognition of his outstanding performance as the former Estonian Defense, Military, Naval and Air Attaché in Washington D.C. Col. Salekešin’s citation, signed by former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, said the Colonel was “a vital link between the Estonian Land Forces and the U.S. Army,” and that he “influenced and strengthened the bonds for the positive military-to-military relationship.” The Legion of Merit is a U.S. military award bestowed upon people “who shall have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious conduct service in the performance of outstanding services.” The degree of Commander is conferred on members of foreign governments only and are awarded for services comparable to those for which the Distinguished Service Medal is given to members of the United States Armed Forces.     Photo by Estonian Defense Forces

Based on Mikhail Shishkin’s article translated from Russian by Marian Schwartz

The May 9th issue of The New York Times carries on its Opinion Page the Russian novelist Mikhail Shishkin’s story. Shishkin recounts that as a youngster he was very proud of his father, who had enlisted at age 18 and was a submariner in the Baltic sea during WW II.  He states that there was a picture of his submarine on the wall and during the May 9 Victory Day anniversaries he donned his sailors uniform with all his medals of honor.

baltic university`(…) Our institution will be recorded by history, the reason being that it is unique. Refugees usually have not the mental spirit to create a university, but we had the spirit (…)’
Information Bulletin Baltic University, 13 December 1947.

In 1947 they thought that historians would investigate the Baltic University even after many, many years. It turned out to be otherwise: the archive seemed to be lost, the buildings destroyed by fire and the institute almost forgotten.

But not totally: there are still people who remember this special university, whose career started right there in Hamburg, who have pictures, documents and stories to tell.

It is not yet too late to ask witnesses to tell about this remarkable institute, the students and fraternities. It is still possible to make a documentary film…

I’m a journalist and also make documentaries. When going through the papers of my Estonian father, I came across the subject of the Baltic University. I found his study book of the Baltic University and became interested in this institute.
