The Estonian government has approved the concept of issuing digital IDs to non-residents. From the end of 2014, foreigners will be able to receive a secure Estonian e-identity. This creates a unique opportunity to create a new set of remotely usable global services.

ERR - Speaking at the Lennart Meri Conference over the weekend, Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said Europe must combat business corruption and eliminate money laundering on the continent, as part of a strong reaction against Russian aggression.

The Central and East European Coalition (CEEC) joins the United States government in condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its illegal annexation of Crimea.  The CEEC, comprised of 18 national organizations representing more than 20 million Americans of Central and Eastern Europe heritage, fully supports Ukraine’s aspirations for a democratic society living in peace and security with its neighbors.

New England Conservatory will bestow honorary Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degrees on four distinguished musicians and scholars at its 143rd annual Commencement Exercises, Sunday, May 18 at 3 p.m. in NEC’s Jordan Hall.

 

The recipients are choral conductor and educator Simon Carrington, jazz composer/bandleader/activist Carla Bley, musicologist and German lieder scholar Susan Youens, and Estonian-born composer Arvo Pärt.

 

Estonian-born Arvo Pärt is one of the most influential and performed of living composers today.

 

After an early period of composing according to neo-classical and then serialist principles, he has, since the late 1970s, employed a self-invented compositional technique, he calls “tintinnabuli.”

Full economic sanctions placed on Russia would reduce Estonia's GDP by 5.6 percent, according to a study by the European Commission. Estonian officials are skeptical, calling some of the presumptions unfounded; member states have been asked for a response by April 24.

Stanford University Libraries welcomes Estonian expats living in the Bay Area to visit Green Library on Saturday, April 26 in order to enjoy a tour of the library and its Baltic collections, and learn more about projects of collecting Estonian memory both in Stanford and Estonia.

In an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour on April 15, Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves called for a "physical presence on the ground" in the region as a deterrence against Russia.


Estonia, a former Soviet republic that shares a border with Russia, is now a member of NATO. Its leadership has been outspoken expressing concern about Russia's incursion into Ukraine.
