Seto Activist MP Rejects Border Treaty
ERR News - Social Democrat MP Inara Luigas said she is disappointed with the new border treaty and will vote against the ratification, despite all the parliament's factions saying they approve of the treaty.
Speaking on ETV on the day of the signing of the agreement, Luigas said an official border is very painful for many Setos, as many are left on the Russian side.
She said the Seto communities in the two countries have close ties, and in that sense, nothing will change.
The Seto people, numbering around 15,000, live in border areas in southeast Estonia and across the border in Russia. Luigas is a Seto activist, having led the Mikitamäe municipality in the Setomaa region, and published a cookbook of Seto food.

Hobu, homonym
The annual FIRE AND ICE party in Tallinn, known for its fire sculptures, burning of Christmas trees (note the nifty tree recycling symbol) and ice sculptures, could also be interpreted as the COME AND STAY party. Such is the beauty of homonüümid or homonyms, words that share the same spelling and pronunciation but have different meanings. The various animal signs of the lunar calender hail from Chinese culture, but do you recognize the profile of this particular green wooden horse? Photo: Riina Kindlam

JBANC Discuss Sochi Issues With Circassian Activists In First Online Google+ Hangout
JBANC Press Release: February 7, 2014
(Washington, DC) – Circassian-American activists, who trace their roots to the Sochi region in the North Caucasus, participated on February 6 in the first-ever Google+ Hangout organized and hosted online by the Joint Baltic American National Committee, Inc. (JBANC).
On the eve of the official opening of the Sochi Olympic Games, there has been much criticism of Russia’s handling of events in the lead-up to the Games, including security concerns, Moscow's clampdown on human rights, environmental disasters-in-the-making, cost and corruption, and quality of construction.
One of the competing narratives has been the story of the native inhabitants of the Sochi region - the Circassians. They have suffered under Russian Tsars, communists, and now the Putin regime, which is being “culturally insensitive” by hosting the Olympics in Sochi, according to Tamara Barsik, Director of Communications for the International Circassian Council.
