As of late June, as much as 18 percent of hard liquor consumed in Estonia was sold on the Latvian side of the border, which, according to the Estonian Union of Alcohol Producers and Importers (ATML), suggests that the Estonian government stands to forgo 15-20 million euros in excise duty and VAT in 2016.

During week 1 (of 4) of Jõekääru camp in Udora, Ontario, which is for Estonian-language speakers, the staff are contemplating trying out food conducive to motivating language acquisition and retention. This could include rohke raua/sisaldusega rohelised juur/viljad (greens rich in iron), or anything kleepuv (sticky) and süsi/vesikute/rohke (rich in carbohydrates). The best such nourishment has proven to be PUDER (porridge) with a side of spinat, the hands-down favorite of Estonian campers worldwide. James D. Melville Jr.

The Estonian American National Council announces that U.S. Ambassador to Estonia, James D. Melville Jr., will be among the featured speakers at the EANC’s November 5, 2016, gala event, which for the first time is coming to San Francisco and the West Coast.   

Saturday, November 5, will be a full day of activities. The public is warmly invited to a series of panels bringing experts together to discuss topics including:  

- Transatlantic security and US-Estonia relations: addressing today’s security challenges in this dynamic political environment

- Engaging with our history: goals and modalities for telling our stories, and continuing to engage Estonian-Americans with our history

- Carrying the legacy forward: strategic directions for EANC; as well as issues and ideas from grassroots Estonian organizations and communities.

Michael Ihlenfeldt

The Estonian Embassy in Washington currently hosts three beautiful paintings that Mr. Michael Ihlenfeldt from Peoria generously donated to the Art Museum of Estonia.

On the paintings are Natalia von Buxhoeveden, her father and her husband, though the identity of the person on the latter portrait has not been formally established.

After the stop at the Embassy the pictures will travel to Estonia to their new home in the Museum.

A retired anesthesiologist who has lived in Peoria since 1993, Ihlenfeldt inherited the painting from his mother when she died 20 years ago.

It was shipped to Peoria from her home in South Africa. Ihlenfeldt’s earliest memories of the painting were when it hung in his childhood home in Germany.
