The Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) at the University of Minnesota has awarded the Hildegard and Gustav Must Graduate Fellowship in Estonian American Studies to Kelley Sundin for summer 2012.

Kersti K. Linask, PhD, professor at the University of South Florida (USF) and EANC member, has been awarded a 2012-2013 Fulbright U.S. Scholar grant to do research at Tartu University in Estonia.
Beginning in September 2012, Dr. Linask will conduct research and teach at the Hematology-Oncology Clinic of the Hospital of the University of Tartu.  Her research project will focus on enhancing the cardiac potential of human mesenchymal stem cells.

The International Learned Committee, which co-ordinates the work of the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory which was established for the in-depth investigation of violations of human rights in occupied Estonia during the second half of the 20th century, today in Kadriorg discussed future research topics that would open different facets of repressive policies implemented by the Soviet Union.

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves opened the international symposium of Estonia's Friends Meeting titled Quo Vadis, Estonia? July 6th at the Estonian Academy of Sciences, focusing on the economic decisions of Estonia in recent years, the euro crisis and Estonia's progress in the field of technology.
"For Estonia, austerity was not a matter of choice, it was inevitable, because borrowing or devaluation was not possible in our situation," the Head of State said. "Despite the eurozone crisis, joining the euro was the right decision for Estonia. On the other hand, while the majority of the parliament supported joining the EFSF, polls indicated that the overwhelming majority of the people were against it. And a democratically elected government cannot go on ignoring the wishes of its voters neither in Estonia nor in Germany."

Introduction Estonia is the Land of Songs. Estonia has given birth to numerous prominent composers and conductors, and we are proud to share their talent with the world. Estonians are righteously considered as the Singing Nation. It is singing that has defined us, otherwise calm and quiet people. It is singing together that built us as a nation. It is singing together that helped us carry freedom in our hearts during the 50 years of Soviet occupation. And it was singing together that blew the fatal punch to the USSR when Estonians raised in what is  now known as the Singing Revolution.

ZAKARIA: Up next, a rare Eurozone economic success story, a country that's growing faster than India, has almost no debt, and it does this all by practicing austerity. I'll explain. ZAKARIA: There is only one country in the entire European Union that has a budget surplus. Its national debt is just 6 percent of GDP, less than a 10th that of Germany's. Its economy grew nearly 8 percent last year. The country is Estonia and it does it while employing a very unfashionable practice, austerity.

The annual commemoration of Victory Day and St. John’s Day In Cleveland was held in the Estonian Cultural Garden.  Ours is one of 29 nationality gardens in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.  This event marked the end of our multiyear project to renovate the Estonian Cultural Garden.  Over the years, we have had Brian West of Still-Life Landscapes replace the crumbling sidewalk with an artfully laid flagstone walkway and planter. The Concrete and Mason’s Union 404 stripped and refinished the monument. They also assisted renowned sculptor David Deming (retired President of Cleveland Institute of Art) in mounting the new bronze flame. The landscapers finished their plantings in time for our annual June 24 gathering.

Ex-Lakewood Resident Died In Vietnam During Sortie

He came from Estonia to Lakewood as a young boy with his parents, sister and brother, and pursued what was then known as the American Dream: Voted best-looking by the Lakewood High School class of 1960, was headed for the University of Miami to major in business administration and had a “cool Ford convertible.” But his goal of becoming a businessman shifted toward dreams more patriotic, and on a summer night in 1966, the day before his 25th birthday, Aado Kommendant’s plane was shot down over the dense jungle of South Vietnam, on his 17th flying mission as a U.S. Air Force pilot. Searchers were unable to find Kommendant, then a lieutenant, and the commanding pilot of the F4C Phantom jet, Capt. Charles W. Walling.
