President Kersti Kaljulaid and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met in Tallinn on September 7, where they discussed NATO's adaptation to the security situation, the alliance's command structure and the deepening of defense cooperation between NATO and the EU.

JBANC And VOCMF Celebrated Black Ribbon Day
The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOCMF) and the Joint Baltic American National Committee (JBANC) held their annual observance of Black Ribbon Day on August 23rd at the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington, DC. The ceremony recognized the 78th anniversary of the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Ambassadors from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Latvia made remarks, all stressing the importance of ensuring that totalitarian regimes never again violate the sovereignty of independent nations. EANC and the embassies of Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland were also represented, along with dozens of participants from other embassies, organizations, and communities, who gathered to remember the victims of the 1939 pact. BAFF Leadership Academy Students Visit Washington, DC
On August 3, a group of over 30 Baltic American Freedom Foundation (BAFF) summertime Leadership Academy students and supervisors participated in briefings at the Lithuanian Embassy and the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington DC. For the fourth summer, JBANC helped organize and coordinate the DC events for the rising high school seniors from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Siku, Siku Gets the Prize
It's 27. august and Juta of Paavli-Mihkli farm, (where the owners were Paavel, then Mihkel, then Paavel, then Mihkel), gets a step-ladder, climbs confidently to the top, and tugs at (sikutab) the valged klaarid or white transparent apples. They don't really want to leave the ema/puu (mother tree) yet, but let go into awaiting hands. Later, down the road, a child's scrunched-up sour face reveals the truth – vara veel! (It's too early.) Nature's rhythms and fruitions are seeing a slight lag this year in Estonia. But who's in a hurry? A biologist speaking on Viker/raadio (the NPR of Eesti), said many pääsukesed (swallows) are currently raising their third brood, which is a good indication we're in for a long summer, since the fledglings need to be strong enough to migrate.
