Soon, this coming July, Estonia will burst into singing and dancing. Well, not every Estonian, but those not singing or dancing will be watching the procession of the participants to the festival grounds, clap for the performances or will be glued to their televisions. On July 5 and 6 will be the XXVI Song Festival and the XIX Dance Festival in Tallinn. A scientifically conducted nationwide survey the Estonians determined what people value the most. Of those who responded 86% rated the Song Festival as the nation’s most important event. The festivals are truly an expression of national unity and the celebration of the country’s culture.

Food competitions organized by Liisi Vanaselja have become a small tradition here in the New York Estonian House – the competition got started two years ago with the “pirukate” (Estonian small pies) contest, Estonian potato salad was in competition last year and this year’s event was to see who has the best secret recipe for “Rosolje” (Estonian beet salad).

Riigikogu Considering Sealing Records Of Committee Proceedings For A Generation
Parliament's Constitutional Committee is discussing whether to classify for 30 years all recordings and transcripts of parliamentary committee meetings, according to Eesti Ekspress.
Meetings have been recorded for years, but journalists and prosecutors have been denied access to the records, the paper reported on January 23, adding that the secrecy is currently not specified in legislation.
