NOTICE. OÜ Koikla Räägi dairy herd's barn needs a herder. URGENT.
Posted on a teadete/tahvel (bulletin board) in the village of Pärsama on Saaremaa island. OÜ = osa/ühing or limited liability company, while Koikla and Räägi are two neighbouring hamlets. Kari = herd and lüpsi/kari literally means "milking herd". To milk is lüpsma. Karjak is a gender-neutral term for a herder. However, more well known historically are karjane, or karja/poiss (herder-boy) and -tüdruk (-girl).

Lembit Beecher is currently Composer in Residence of Opera Philadelphia, Gotham Chamber Opera and Music Theatre Group.

On October 15th and 17th in collaboration with the Scrag Mountain Music, he will present a concert of 20th and 21st century Estonian and Hungarian Music inspired by folk music including Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, Veljo Tormis, Lembit Breecher and György Ligeti plus five world premiere “micro-commissions” based on Estonian Folk Songs.

Washington, DC (JBANC) - Baltic Caucus co-chairman Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) introduced the “Black Ribbon Day” resolution in the U.S. House of Represen-tatives on July 16. The legislation supports the designation of August 23 as a day of remembrance to recognize the victims of Soviet Communist and Nazi regimes.

The Executive Board of the Estonian American National Council gathered in Washington as a precursor of the annual meeting of all the council members. The occasion was to attend a reception at the residence of the ambassador of Estonia, her Excellency Marina Kaljurand.

The Estonian American National Council held its annual meeting on September 14, 2013, at the Estonian Embassy in Washington DC.  Featured agenda items were EANC’s 2014 activities, which include its continued support for Estonian America youth organizations such as the boy scouts, girl guides and Long Island children’s summer camp, and on the political front, financial and leadership support for the Joint Baltic American National Council (JBANC) and cooperation with the Central Eastern European Coalition.  In addition, EANC has pledged support for Sky Films’ documentary film about the Estonian Song Festival, “To Breathe As One.”

Nancy Bush,  an avid American knitter, became an enthusiast of Estonian handicrafts when she found a book at the Salt Lake City Library about 20 years ago. The book was printed in Russian in 1956 and talked about Estonian Folk Costumes. At the end of the book she encountered pictures of beautiful mittens and socks from different Estonian counties. It was love at first sight. .
Since then she has become further acquainted with the Estonian handicraft culture through other books, magazines and meeting with Estonians abroad and in Estonia.  She found the magazine Triinu, which was published by Estonians abroad, a treasure chest. Nancy Bush has become a devoted promulgator of Estonian handicrafts through her famous knitting seminars, the prestigious handicraft magazine Piece Work and her books written about Estonian knitting traditions. Piece Work magazine has published her stories, pictures and patterns of the Estonian knitting culture, the stories of World War II Estonian refugees’ handicraft work and the Haapsalu lace shawl.

One advantage of living in hot Texas is this. On my way to San Francisco I did not finish my cup of coffee by time I arrived at the airport parking lot. But when I returned a week later from ESTO, the coffee in the car was just as hot as when I left it.
