Q & A With Mark Kostabi
October 17, 2013
BY SIMONE BROWN - Sun-Gazette Correspondent, Williamsport Sun-Gazette
World-renowned artist and composer Mark Kostabi is displaying his work for the rest of October in Williamsport, PA, at 33 East, 33 E. Third St. The event is presented by the Converge Gallery, who helped hang 11 original canvases created by Kostabi.
From Rome, Kostabi answered questions via email regarding his vast body of work, major accomplishments and personal feelings about art.
SIMONE BROWN: Initially, what attracted you to begin creating art?
MARK KOSTABI: I was in the daze of my early childhood and the pencil and paper appeared. I had a connection. I drew well and my shapers encouraged me: my parents, friends, fellow students and elementary school teachers.
SB: What medium of art did you first begin in?
MK: Crying, then laughing, as a baby conceptual artist. Staining my diapers was my first painting. Eventually I found a pencil in my hand and I started drawing monsters. Then robots, then computers much like today.
SB: How did your art begin to take off internationally?

TÄNAVALT. FROM THE STREET
The fall pet care campaign in Tallinn urged citizens to "KIIBI OR KAOTA" – kiip or lose. The upper text reads Kiip on suureks abiks kaduma läinud kassi leidmisel. – "A kiip is of great help when trying to find a lost cat." The same message is repeated in Russian. Not only a cat or dog can carry a kiip; in fact there's one embedded in your debit and credit cards, your Estonian identification card (ID kaart) and perhaps even your passport. Since the relatively new word has only one definition in Estonian, the prefix mikro- is often dropped. Sound familiar?

In Order To Keep, Make Sure To Kiip
The message on the poster goes: "Good citizen! Implanting your cat with a microchip is a procedure that is safe (ohutu) and quick. The microchip (mikrokiip) is the size of half a grain of rice. It contains the 16-digit code (16-kohaline kood) that is the only link (ühendus/lüli) between owner and pet (lemmik/loom). The chip can only be read with a special chip scanner (kiibi-/lugeja) from a distance of half a metre. As of January 1, 2015 microchipping cats and registering them at Tallinn's Pet Registry (lemmik/looma/register) is mandatory. For more information go to www.tallinn.ee/est/lemmikloom/

Ei aeg ei peatu
Kas fotol olev hoone on tuttav? See asub Tallinna kesklinnas Viru hotelli vastas ning selles paiknes kunagi Eesti esimene rulltrepp. Hoone ehitati üheks kindlaks otstarbeks, "mille keskus ei pea asuma suure kolossina Tallinna ühe kõige kallima krundi peal,” arvab selle endise nõukogu liige, küll aga jääb antud ettevõte koos paljude teistega edasi pinna rentnikuna. Foto: Riina Kindlam
