Heino Maasikas In Memoriam
Heino Maasikas, age 95, of Toms River, New Jersey passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2021.
Heino was born and raised in Estonia, fleeing to Germany before settling in America in the 1950s.
He served for the Estonian, German and U.S. Armies.

Spordiliit Golf Tournament

The Lakewoodi Eesti Mängud golf tournament organized by Eesti Spordiliit USA attracted 38 players (32 men + 6 women) for a spirited competition at Lakewood Country Club.
Mother nature provided perfect golf weather to help celebrate ESTO sport, friendships, and culture at ESL's annual summer sports weekend.
It was especially remarkable to have our “19th Hole” get together at the Lakewood Estonian House.

Stanford Libraries Acquires the Personal Library of Renowned Estonian Scholar Jaan Puhvel
Jaan Puhvel and his wife Madli (Hansen) Puhvel.
The Puhvel library consists of over 13,000 books and periodicals pertaining to Estonian and Baltic history, culture, society, politics, and economy.
As such, the library makes a tremendous addition to Stanford Libraries' Estonian and Baltic collection.

UN Security Council Focuses on Security Situation in Afghanistan
At a meeting called by Norway and Estonia, members of the United Nations Security Council agreed that sanctions, as well as international aid and regional cooperation should be used to influence the Taliban after its takeover of Afghanistan.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented a message to the Council and the international community on the need to speak with one voice to uphold human rights in Afghanistan in the current critical situation.

Kristjan Prikk Presents Credentials as Estonia Ambassador to U.S.

Estonia's new ambassador to the United States, Kristjan Prikk, has presented his credentials to President Joe Biden, via an exchange of letters between Tallinn and Washington, due to coronavirus considerations.
Prikk is a former defense ministry secretary general, and replaces Jonatan Vseviov, who had been ambassador since 2018 and took on a new post at the foreign ministry earlier this year.
"Estonia and the U.S. are the best allies and partners," Prikk, who media reports first linked to the role back in January, said of his appointment.

Remembering The Turbulent Times of 1991

We all have our memories of that turbulent time. At the time I was a member of the U.S. Army Military Police stationed in Germany.
I was assigned to a Military Police Customs unit in the Stuttgart area.
The morning of the Coup, on the 18th of August,1991, I was out and about conducting Customs Inspections.

Five Creative Projects in Baltic Studies Receive Baumanis Grant
Heidi Erbsen, one of the recipients of the AABS 2021–2022 Baumanis Grant for Creative Projects in Baltic Studies.
The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies is pleased to announce that M. Lee Alexander, Ugnė Marija Andrijauskaitė, Heidi Erbsen, Ignas Maldus, and Sami Siva have been awarded the 2021–2022 Baumanis Grant for Creative Projects in Baltic Studies.
The Baumanis Grant is an award created to honor Velta Marija Baumanis of Mount Brydges, Ontario, who left a generous bequest to AABS at the end of her career as an architect.
