Audiobooks of Estonian Literary Classics on Smartphones Soon
With 2020 being the Year of Digital Culture in Estonia, the Ministry of Culture is launching the Estonian audiobook market. As a first step, the texts of 50 literary classics, from Oskar Luts' "Kevade" ("Spring") to Indrek Hargla's "Apteeker (Apothecary) Melchior" will be recorded in Estonian, as read by well-known actors.
The first audiobooks will be available to listeners by Midsummer (jaanipäev).

Senate Hearing Held for Nominee to Ambassador Post in Estonia

On May 13th, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC) held a nomination hearing for five proposed ambassador postings, including the nomination of Mr. William Ellison Grayson of California to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Estonia.

Emergency Situation Declared Over in Estonia
During an online government session held on May 16, the Estonian Government approved a resolution ending the state of emergency in the country as of midnight on Sunday, May 17.
The respective orders of the government and the head of the emergency situation were thereby repealed.

In 2001 there was a fire at the Estonian Embassy in Washington. Firefighters did their absolute best to save the building.

Estonians On The West Coast And How We Are Faring During The Pandemic

Since Covid shelter in place started nearly two months ago we, like most families, have had to adjust to remote working, schooling and community engagement.
These changes are minor in comparison to those who have suffered loss of life or are struggling financially. Thankfully our family and friends have remained healthy, but our hearts go out to those that have suffered.

Armored Trains in Estonia

There were a couple of articles published in your paper describing the armored trains in Estonia and that stirred up many memories.
My father served in the armored train regiment from the time it was formed until they were dismantled by the Soviet occupation in 1940. l was born in February 1924 and my memories go back to the late 1920's.
